Red-Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas)

Where to Find Them:
These iconic frogs are native to the tropical rainforests of Central America, including Costa Rica. They thrive in humid lowland areas, often near rivers or ponds, where they cling to leaves and branches.

Why They’re Special:

  • Striking Appearance: They are known for their vibrant green bodies, blue-and-yellow striped sides, and bright red eyes (which they use to startle predators!).
  • Nocturnal Lifestyle: They’re most active at night, hunting insects like moths and crickets.
  • Unique Parenting: Females lay eggs on leaves above the water; when tadpoles hatch, they drop into the water below.

Fun Fact:
Their bold colors are a defense mechanism—flashing their red eyes and bright sides can confuse predators long enough to escape!

Spotting Them:
Look for them on vegetation near water sources at night. Their loud “chack-chack” call is a giveaway during rainy season!
